The Healing Field of Flags in the west parking lot of the Pentagon. The USAF Memorial is in the background.
These are a set of additional photos taken on 09.11.08 at the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. The memorial opened to the public yesterday evening at 7:00 p.m. and is open 24/7/365. To see the D.C. Confidential series on this newest monument and the first 9/11 memorial at one of the sites of the terrorist attacks, go here.
Nearly 3,000 flags represented those killed on 09.11.01. Flags tied with a blue ribbon represent those 184 souls who died
on American Airlines Flight 77 or in the Pentagon.
NCOs from the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Forcehelped visitors locate specific benches. The tall USAF sergeant
in this picture helped me find the bench of Scott Powell.
He was easily nearly 7' tall!
This couple was sitting along the perimeter wall when I arrived and, nearly an hour later, when I left, they were still there.
Mementos left on a bench. The stones are called ebenezers and are left as a remembrance. My guess is, the person represented by this bench was Jewish.
I took this shot to provide some perspective on the orientation of the benches. Those facing away from the USAF Memorial in the background were on AA Flight 77.
Those facing toward it were in the Pentagon.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack on the Pentagon, severalfirst responders and military personnel draped a flag over the side of the building.
Yesterday's events included a remembrance of that moment.
As the evening progressed more and more people arrived. When I left around 8:30, hundreds more were continuing to pour into the memorial.
